Stewards of the Land
Conservation Restrictions In Barnstable
Stewards of the Land is a new special section of our website. These articles, written by BLT staff member Olivia Miller, focus on the people behind the conservation restrictions and the paths they took in order to insure that the land in Barnstable remains pristine and preserved.
Last year two caring couples worked independently to preserve their land, in turn, protecting the Sandy Neck/Barnstable Harbor Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC).
This rare ecosystem defines Barnstable’s “Northside.” The spectacular barrier beach system is recognized by the state of Massachusetts because of the quality and significance of its natural and cultural resources. The ACEC designation creates a framework for local and regional stewardship. It brings attention to and raises awareness of the uniqueness of this critical resource area; however, no specific regulations protect it.
That’s one of the many reasons why the voluntary conservation restrictions of Judy and Walter Kaess on Beale Way, and Doug Mitchell and Christine Welsh of Seabury Farm are so very important.
