for her efforts to protect, preserve and sustain the Cape’s fragile environment.
An avid sailor and passionate environmentalist, Susan Nickerson has spent her entire professional life promoting efforts to protect Cape Cod’s environment and unique heritage. While leading the Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) in the 1990s, Sue was directly responsible for forging the extensive coalitions necessary to enact three vital pieces of state legislation: the Cape Cod Commission Act, the Cape Cod Land Bank Act, and the Upper Cape Wildlife and Water Supply Reserve.
Her impressive career includes water resource protection work at the County Health Department and Cape Cod Planning and Economic Development Commission; ten years as executive director of the APCC; and, four years as executive director of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, where she established the Soundkeeper Program. She was also a consultant at The Horsley Witten Group, where she worked on water resource protection at local, state and federal levels, and executive director of the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s Association, working to promote fisheries conservation and sustainability. Sue also served on the Town Conservation Commission, and was an active volunteer promoting major open space purchases by the Town in the 1980s.
