Marstons Mills

On December 2 from 1.00 pm to dusk (4.00? 4.30? ) AmeriCorps will be performing herring run maintenance.  BLT owns an 11 acre old bog through which runs a portion of the Marstons Mills River.  This is the “hidden herring run.”  The majority of herring use a portion of the River currently maintained by the Town of Barnstable Natural Resources Department. The branch of the River which flows through Barnstable Land Trust land needs to be cleared of fallen branches and a few other obstructions to improve the chances of the herring making it to their spawning grounds in Middle Pond.

Barnstable Land Trust is inviting volunteers to join AmeriCorps on this project.  Loppers and hand saws will be needed.  Waders will be needed if you want to be able to get into the River.  AmeriCorps may have some tools to share, but please bring what tools you have.  And don’t forget work gloves and warm clothing.

If you would like to work alongside the team, please contact BLT Land Manager Red Bansfield on his cell phone, (508-868-1715) so that AmeriCorps will expect you, and to get directions.
