Barnstable Land Trust Land Stewardship Coordinator Position

We are seeking a full-time Land Stewardship Coordinator.

After over two years at Barnstable Land Trust, Will Holden has decided to move home to be nearer to family and friends. As our 2016 AmeriCorps service member and then our first full time Land Stewardship Coordinator, Will has made an enormous difference in our land stewardship capacity and we are grateful for his hard work, forward thinking, and generous nature.

Land Stewardship Coordinator Job Description:

Our vision is a Cape Cod where the special places that people love are protected for present and future generations. Founded in 1983, the Barnstable Land Trust (BLT) is a member-supported, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to preserve the open spaces and natural resources within the Town of Barnstable – its wetlands, woodlands, wildlife and water quality.

Overview of the Position
This position will manage a portfolio of conservation restrictions and fee-owned lands. Responsibilities will include planning and coordinating land management and monitoring activities, coordinating volunteers, ensuring timely monitoring of all parcels, management of stewardship database and general support towards fulfilling BLT’s mission. Responsibilities include:

Land Stewardship
• Develop land management plans for conservation properties; facilitate action on those plans.
• Identify land stewardship needs on parcels; prioritize stewardship needs in consultation with Executive Director; organize resources; secure necessary permits (if any) to effectively coordinate land stewardship projects.
• Coordinate volunteers and volunteer committee for appropriate stewardship projects (e.g. property monitoring, clean-ups, trail work, and updating information in trailhead kiosks, etc.).
• Effectively communicate with BLT staff and other colleagues including landowners, abutters and officials from town, county, state and/or federal government, as well as businesses, donors, volunteers and the public.
• Respond to and solve incoming stewardship issues (e.g. downed trees, damaged/vandalized signage, encroachment, trespassing, hunting concerns, etc.).
• Safely operate and maintain land stewardship equipment. Guide volunteers with the same safety and maintenance protocols.
• Monitor conservation properties and conservation restrictions (CRs) on schedule and create monitoring reports. Must take action on CR violations and issues.
• Update LANDSCAPE database for land management and new acquisitions and CRs.
• Manage GIS database for property mapping needs and acquisition prioritization.
• Oversee maintenance of BLT truck, mower and other tools and equipment.
• Collaborate with town when available to facilitate maintenance and support of Cape Cod Pathway’s trail system with the town.

Volunteer Recruitment, Training, and Coordination
• Work with ED to identify positions and/or tasks that can be completed by volunteers.
• Recruit and review prospective volunteers.
• Apply for, supervise, and work with AmeriCorps Individual Placement member, if available.
• Coordinate volunteer stewardship activities.
• Maintain up-to-date mailing and telephone spreadsheet of active volunteers and add/coordinate this information.
• Coordinate volunteer appreciation and recognition events and programs.

Land Acquisition/Protection
• Support land acquisition work as needed and as time is available.

• Support fundraising events when necessary (e.g. setup help, technology, etc.)
• Capture photos and video of stewardship activities for media related needs.

• Highly organized.
• Skilled with and enjoys working with people, including landowners, town officials and volunteers.
• Experience with conflict resolution.
• Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• A passion for land preservation and interest in working outdoors, often alone.
• Enjoys working in a small office and relying on, training, and motivating volunteers for support.

Desired Experience
• Demonstrated success in volunteer organization and experience or familiarity with land stewardship and land protection practices.
• Experience operating tablet, GPS and GIS mapping software, Illustrator, and other relevant software
• Land trust experience or related conservation field experience.
• Experience working with and supervising AmeriCorps members and groups
• Bachelor’s degree in related field.
• General knowledge of local flora and fauna.
• Understanding of town municipal government and operation.
• The ability to interpret maps, surveys, and other field and conveyance documentation.
• The ability to create land monitoring reports and management plans.
• The ability to safely use motorized equipment such as chainsaws and weed-whackers.
• An understanding of land conservation, including conservation restrictions and easements.

Travel is primarily local during the business day. The applicant must possess a valid driver’s license and be comfortable driving BLT truck.

Physical Demands
Outdoor field work requires hiking in steep and uneven terrain, exposure to ticks and poison ivy, and carrying up to 25 pounds. Applicants must be able to use and maintain power and hand tools.
