Allison Bargabos, 22, is the BLT 2018-19 AmeriCorps Cape Cod service member. Allison is working with Will Holden, BLT Land Stewardship Coordinator (and a former BLT AmeriCorps service member!) mainly focusing on BLT’s property management projects and helping with trail maintenance. Allison is also working with the Sandwich Natural Resources Department as part of her AmeriCorps service.
She grew up in Syracuse, New York and this is her first time on Cape Cod. Allison is a recent graduate of SUNY Geneseo, where she majored in geology; it wasn’t what she originally planned to study, she explained. “I took an introductory class and loved learning about the earth and how things were formed,” she explained. When she learned about AmeriCorps in college, Allison was intrigued by the focus on the environment and the opportunity for hands-on experiences.
Allison started at BLT in October and has been familiarizing herself with various properties under BLT’s stewardship. “I’m getting a better idea of the issues we need to be aware of and what would happen if the properties were left unchecked,” she said. She was the team leader at a recent AmeriCorps service day at BLT’s Coombs Bogs in Centerville, helping organize and oversee AmeriCorps volunteers. “I tried to make things more efficient and make sure no one was dehydrated! I thought Coombs Bogs was really interesting and it was cool to see it divided into three different levels – forest, shrubs and fields. And it was so pretty with the leaves changing colors.”
Allison will be working with BLT through the end of July and is slated to be the team leader of several more projects this year. “I’m really excited to be out on the land. It feels good to do work that I like and actually make a difference.”
