Protected Lands Catalog
Property ID: BLT #141
Grantor: Orenda Wildlife Land Trust, Inc. (1540 Main Street CR)
Acquisition Date: August 3, 2018
Location: 1540 Main Street, West Barnstable
Description: With the donation of a 4.52-acre conservation restriction (CR) to BLT on October 15, 2013, the Pogorelc family completed the protection of their family lands. The property was owned by the Orenda Wildlife Land Trust until 2018, when the two land trusts realized it made sense to swap this parcel for land donated to BLT in 1984 by Charles and Barbara Birdsey. (Click here for more information.) Both organizations now own lands that connect to other contiguous parcels, increasing open space and wildlife corridors.
Composed of freshwater wetlands and critical buffering upland, the land lies within the Sandy Neck/Barnstable Harbor Area of Critical Environmental Concern and abuts a Priority Habitat for Rare Species. It is also located within a Critical Natural Landscape area and the Old Kings Highway Regional Historic District. This follows an earlier gift of 7 acres north of the railroad tracks, land that protects the site of the historic West Barnstable Brick Company.
Habitat: Upland and freshwater wetlands
