Description: BLT led the effort to preserve this unique property, which protects the historic nature of the old Custom House. The Town of Barnstable purchased the property with funds from the Community Preservation Act. A conservation restriction held by BLT ensures that the property will remain a trailhead for Cape Cod Pathways, the extensive network of walking trails that stretch across Cape Cod.
The upland forest, meadow and freshwater maple swamp represent an important part of the village’s historic core. The land, which runs from Rt. 6A to the railroad bed, abuts “Old Salt Estates,” 28 acres of Town conservation land. Access is via a 15-foot right-of-way between the Blacksmith Shop and Old Jail at the building now known as the Coast Guard Museum.
Habitat: Freshwater wetlands, upland, holly/red maple swamp
Parcel ID: Town of Barnstable Assessor’s #299055001, 299055002
