Barnstable Land Trust (BLT) is a private, non-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving the open spaces and natural resources of the Town of Barnstable. BLT holds wildlife habitat, scenic views, wetlands, sensitive watershed parcels, forests and other valuable open space, in its natural state, in perpetuity for the benefit of the community.

Preserving the Little River

Barnstable Land Trust has raised $187,000 of the total project cost of $210,000. BLT needs to raise an additional $23,000 by June 17, 2008 to preserve the five-acre Baker Property along the Little River in Cotuit. Located off Sampson’s Mill Road, the Baker land is the last vacant parcel along the Little River. It has been on Cotuit’s “watch list” since 1985.

There is a narrow window of opportunity. BLT must record the Baker purchase before June 30, 2008 in order to receive the State’s Conservation Partnership Grant of $60,000. In addition to the State’s grant, to date BLT has been awarded $10,000 by the Cape Cod Five Charitable Foundation, $7,000 by the Fields Pond Foundation and $5,000 by the William P. Wharton Trust. BLT’s request for $100,000 from the Community Preservation Act was recently approved by the Barnstable Town Council. This in combination with $5,000 in private donations brings the total left to raise within reach.

BLT must still raise $23,000!

The Baker Property is significant because it:

  • preserves water quality of the adjacent Cotuit well fields
  • connects with 800 acres of protected open space
  • enhances the waters of the Little River, which feeds freshwater to the Cotuit Bay
  • completes the acquisition of vacant land along the Little River, a major corridor in Barnstable’s “Open Space Plan”
  • protects varied wildlife habitat

The Baker land is an attractive location to build a house. At least one house with the requisite septic system could be “shoehorned” onto the upland portion of the property, even though it is a sensitive area that is an important filter for water quality. The area is home to several mammals, including fox and coyote. Osprey nest nearby and Red-shouldered Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks and Wild Turkeys have been confirmed in the area.

In 2007, BLT completed 11 land-saving initiatives, protecting nearly 70 acres. BLT is now the steward of over 740 acres of land held in perpetuity for the community’s benefit.  Support comes almost entirely from local businesses and individuals through sponsorships, donations and special events.

Contributions to help save the Baker Property may be sent to: Barnstable Land Trust at P.O. Box 224, Cotuit, MA 02635.

LOOK WHAT WE ACHIEVED IN 2007!

When it comes to preserving land, 2007 was a great year for BLT and the Town of Barnstable! We are thrilled to report that 11 parcels of land were either put under a Conservation Restriction (CR) or given as outright gifts – totaling 69.80 acres of land within the Town of Barnstable that will be protected and preserved. Thanks to each of the landowners for this bounty.

The gifts and CRs break down as follows:

    • 8 CRs were recorded – for a total of 65.85 acres of land
    • 3 parcels were gifted – totaling 3.95 acres of land

The biggest CR recorded protects over 25 acres of land in West Barnstable; the smallest is just over half an acre in Marstons Mills. No matter what the size, however, each of these parcels provides significant benefit to our community for a number of reasons: habitat and/or wetland protection; preservation of scenic views; importance to fish, wildlife or plants; protection of marine water quality and/or shoreline…in short, to limit or prevent construction of land that has been identified as having natural resource value.

More details about the CRs and gifts of land will be featured in the next issue of the BLT newsletter, Resources, which will be out in early spring. Stay tuned!
