Make Nature-Inspired Valentines

Getting the kids outdoors can sometimes be a challenge in the dead of winter, but there’s an abundance of discoveries to be made year round. This Valentine’s Day, we’re opting to skip the sugary sweets and plastic trinkets and getting the kids outside to gather their valentine craft materials.

Kids can create these fun nature valentines with materials that are easily found (and free!) in your yard to give to their nature-loving friends and loved ones on Valentine’s Day.

Materials:

Found in Nature:

  • Small rocks

  • Acorns

  • Lichen

  • Twigs

Other Materials:

To make the Valentines:

  1. Go on a scavenger hunt! Search outdoors for small rocks, acorns, lichen and small twigs. Allow time to dry out if necessary.

  2. Download and print the BLT Nature Valentine Printout on paper or cardstock. No printer? No problem! Just draw a heart on the paper and handwrite the valentine message.

  3. Cut out the valentines. Then cut rectangles of construction paper or cardstock that are slightly larger than the valentine so that it creates a border. Glue together. Thicker paper or cardstock will help to support the heavier items like rocks.

  4. Arrange the found materials on their respective valentines and glue in place. Allow glue to dry, address the valentines and give to a friend or loved one!
