Deirdre G. Callanan, Coombs Bog

Listen:

Possibility

by Deirdre G. Callanan

Below September’s gauze

where a scatter of cranberries gleams,

some will imagine the bog as it was.

but the girl forsakes her reflection

in this balm between sorrows,

instead attends to the bee’s delirium.

They’re alone at this hour —

not even a turtle or damselfly,

just this bee & a girl, humming.

Deirdre Callanan, a journalist, photographer, teacher and poet, moved to the Cape in 1981 from Virginia. Since 2006, she has served on the writing faculty of the Washington-Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis.
