As part of Barnstable Land Trust’s (BLT) 40th Anniversary year, this first ever two-day live reading of Henry David Thoreau’s Cape Cod celebrates an iconic work focused on the natural beauty of Cape Cod and inspires reflection on how the environment and life on Cape Cod has changed over time. Experience “another world,” as Thoreau did, while discovering the plants, animals, topography, weather, and people of Cape Cod as readers bring this classic account to life at BLT’s Michael R. Kramer Center, a new post and beam barn located on the grounds of the historic Fuller Farm. The 2-day ten hour event will also be live-streamed. Shuttle buses from off-site parking areas will allow the general public to picnic, hike, and listen to readers who will be stationed inside the barn.

Thoreau’s Cape Cod Readathon is an invitation to everyone, including Cape residents and visitors, who seek inspiration, appreciate nature, enjoy art and history, and want to explore how changes in the environment have impacted daily life, our economy, and personal health and wellness over time. Thanks to a community of partners on Cape Cod and in Concord (Massachusetts), a wide range of free special events and additional programming has been scheduled and can be seen here.

Thoreau’s Cape Cod Readathon is proudly sponsored by the Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation with additional support from the Mass Cultural Council.

The Readathon Experience

Special Events

(All events are free unless otherwise noted.)

  • Since Thoreau’s first visit to Cape Cod was in October 1849, the Readathon has been scheduled from 10 am – 3 pm on Saturday, October 7, and Sunday, October 8. Readers will be stationed inside the Michael R. Kramer Center, a new post and beam barn on BLT’s historic Fuller Farm property in Marstons Mills which is reminiscent of the countryside that Thoreau would have seen from his carriage. The public can also enjoy the event virtually since it will be streamed online.

There will also be a public viewing gallery (a standing area) on the interior left side of the barn that will enable the public to come and go. Depending on weather and traffic noise, the sliding barn doors will also be open for public viewing.

  • Yes, the readathon is a free in-person and online event that is open to the public as are many of the pre-events being offered by BLT and its partners.

  • Because of the limited parking at Fuller Farm, all readers and visitors will need to use a shuttle bus from the West Villages Elementary School, 760 Osterville/West Barnstable Road, Marstons Mills, which is only 5 minutes away. A 14-seat passenger van will run from 9:15 – 3:45 pm each day in continuous 10-15 minute loops.

  • We anticipate that the readathon will take a total of ten hours, or approximately five hours each of the two days.

  • There will be a public viewing gallery (a standing area) on the interior left side of the barn that will enable the public to come and go. Depending on weather and traffic noise, the sliding barn doors will also be open for public viewing. Because of the limited capacity inside the barn, we expect that some nonreaders will have to view the event from outside the barn doors. Some of our partners will have outside activities and tents. There are also meadow and woodland walking trails and visitors are invited to bring a picnic and/or chairs to enjoy the beauty of Fuller Farm.

  • We are excited to announce that “Henry” (aka Richard Smith, the pre-eminent living history personification of Henry David Thoreau) will launch the readathon in historic fashion. In addition, over 50 in-person readers will read five (5) minute segments, representing voices from the community, nature lovers, local leaders, and Thoreau fans during this unique event. View the Reader Roster here.

  • Registration of Community Readers is now closed. If you would like more information, please email sue@blt.org.

  • This will be the first ever live readathon of Thoreau’s Cape Cod! Inspired by Moby Dick and Ulysses reading marathons, Barnstable Land Trust thought this would be a perfect way to celebrate its 40th Anniversary and engage the entire community in learning more about our natural environment and its importance.

  • Please return to this page on October 7 and 8 to access the live streamed event starting at 10 am each day. Or watch the livestream via YouTube here.

  • Kicking off in August, over ten free events are being offered by BLT and its Cape Cod and Concord (MA) partners including virtual reading groups, history/nature walks and talks, art workshops, and educational programs. Learn more here.

  • There are plenty of volunteer opportunities available including shuttle bus ambassadors, registration, marketing, onsite greeters, etc. If you are interested in getting involved please contact sue@blt.org for more information.

  • Barnstable Land Trust relies on the generous support of donors and our community. Please consider making a donation to support Thoreau’s Cape Cod Readathon and other year-round events and programs! Make a donation here.
