A Message from the Executive Director
Covid has put a premium on nature.
A handful of like-minded conservationists want to take a lead on ensuring our future outdoors. They will match your year-end gift, dollar-for-dollar, up to $30,000 to help conserve our beautiful Cape Cod community.
We have a job to do. With over 2,000 acres of our most wild and beautiful lands left to protect in Barnstable, we need to work harder and faster. Will you help us?
Nature Will Help Us if We Let Her
We need safe drinking water — let’s protect the lands in drinking water zones to prevent further degradation to our water supply.
We need to clean up our ponds and bays — let’s conserve land to allow better natural filtration of water before it reaches our beautiful waterways. We need to store more carbon to mitigate the impacts of climate change — let’s protect our salt marshes, forests and open space, which are the largest carbon sinks we have.
We need to get outside for our physical and mental health — let’s conserve more land so everyone has opportunities to be in nature.
Our Shared Heritage is at Risk
Our natural resources need defending like never before. A hot real estate market is driving residential development faster than in recent memory. According to the Cape Cod Times, October 25, 2020 article, “Home and condominium sales are booming like never before on Cape Cod.”
Let’s Protect Our Special Places Together
Together we can make 2021 a year of accomplishment:
• Protecting the remaining open spaces in Barnstable: We will close on one major property in 2020 and another early in 2021 to conserve over 32 acres.
• Stewarding our land: We will grow our land management volunteer base to take better care of our properties. So far in 2020, we’ve gained 10 volunteers!
• Engaging people outdoors: Our office and trails are open to the community, volunteers and programs. We will develop a trail guide for hiking in Barnstable, highlighting Town, BLT and other trails, so that open space is available to all.
I invite you to join us in meeting the challenges of our community. Individual donations are our main source of revenue and every dollar counts. Thank you so much for your support.
With gratitude,
Janet Milkman
Executive Director
