With summer in full bloom on Cape Cod, our protected lands and wildlife are thriving. At Barnstable Land Trust (BLT), we are also blooming. We are building the capacity to meet the urgent needs of our time, and we need your help. At BLT we don’t just preserve land, we make a strategic effort to enhance the conservation value of the 1,250 acres (and growing!) that we have safeguarded over the last 40 years. This means considering ecological, economic, social, and cultural dimensions to improve the quality of our land, air, water, and biodiversity. This increased stewardship effort takes time, people and resources.
An anonymous donor has generously offered a challenge grant this summer: if we raise $20,000 from our community by the end of September, they will match it! This funding is essential for us to expand our land stewardship efforts at this critical moment.
Why the urgency? Given the pressures of climate change and the increasing pace of development, the importance of conserving more land faster has never been greater. As our conservation efforts intensify, our stewardship capacity must grow in parallel.
Increasing our stewardship staff this year will enable BLT to:
Expand volunteer projects to include weekends and evenings to accommodate families and full-time workers
Increase field-based learning opportunities with local schools to inspire the next generation of conservationists
Enhance pollinator habitats at 8 BLT properties totaling more than 44 acres of increased conservation value
Create new trails and improve accessibility at current properties
Implement a management strategy to enhance the legacy holly groves at the newly acquired Wheeler Holly Preserve
