We’re excited to share that the Land Acquisition and Protection Committee (LAPC) Spring Walking Weekend will go ahead! Read on to see all the wonderful walks they have planned for this fun weekend outdoors.

Friday, June 4th

Introduction to Long Pasture

Friday, June 4th @ 8AM, Cummaquid

Starting Point: Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary

2 miles, time to Complete: 1.5 to 2 hours

Narrative: Join Teacher/Naturalist Andrea Higgins to explore Long Pasture’s 100 acres sanctuary. Come enjoy your neighborhood Sanctuary and it’s fields, woods, ponds, vernal pools, marshes, and a gorgeous view of Barnstable Harbor, Sandy Neck and Cape Cod Bay.

Directions: Take Bone Hill Rd. to small parking lot on Left side of the road.

Falcon Rd Walk

Meet at 9:45AM for a 10AM start, West Barnstable

Starting Point: Jenkins Wildlife Sanctuary Parking Lot

3 miles, time to Complete: 1 1/2 to 2 hours

Narrative: Walk the path that the indigenous people and the Pilgrims used 400 years ago. Mark Wirtanen (the former and long-time owner of the Falcon Road parcel) will likely join us for this informational walk. We will go through woods, pass ponds and cranberry bogs as we loop back to the starting area. Carpool if possible. Rain

cancels.

Rating of Terrain and Pace: Moderate.

Directions: Jenkins Wildlife Sanctuary: Small parking lot off of Church St. in West Barnstable.

Old Neck Lane Walk/ Red Bansfield Memorial Walk

5PM, Barnstable Village

1 mile, time to Complete: 1 hour

Starting Point: CCCC Parking Lot #7

Narrative: This will be a walk that features both natural history and Cape Cod history. We will walk across a typical Cape Cod pine/oak forest. We will see evidence of how Cape Cod was carved out by glaciers, remnants of old stone walls from the early agricultural life of Barnstable.

Rating of Terrain and Pace: Very hilly landscape.

Directions: Meet at Cape Cod Community College parking Lot #7. Entrance to College is North of Exit 6 on Rte. 132.

Saturday, June 5th

Santuit Preserve Walk/Jim Gould Memorial Walk

8AM, Cotuit

Starting Point: Santuit/Newtown Rd.

2 miles, time to Complete: 1.5 hours

Narrative: During this walk you will see abandoned cranberry bogs, scenic vistas around the pond, a herring run with restored fish ladder and dam. The Preserve is an interesting collection of views and topography and history. It was once slated for development consisting of residences and a golf course. This Property is shared with the Town of Mashpee.

Rating of Terrain and Pace: Moderate

Directions: Take Rte. 28 to Santuit/Newtown Rd. heading North. Proceed for approximately 0.7 miles. The park on Left Side of Road, heading Due North.

Old Jail Lane “ Rock Walk”

2PM, Barnstable

Starting Point: Old Jail Lane Conservation Trailhead on Old Jail Lane

2.5 miles, time to complete: 75 minutes

Narrative: Join Pathways enthusiast Lev Malakhoff on a tour of some of Old Jail Lane Conservation Area’s most famous rocks. These remnants of the ice age have often been focal points of the Pathways network. Our walk includes arguably the largest of all in Barnstable: “Picnic Rock” - so named due to the flat top - suitable for a family-sized picnic!

Directions: From Phinneys Lane, turn onto Old Jail Lane. Trailhead is a half of a mile on the left. From Route 6A, turn onto Old Jail Lane . Trailhead is 0.6 miles on the right.

Sunday, June 6th

Cape Cod Pathways through Barnstable Village

9AM, West Barnstable

Starting point: Parking area to the left of the Coast Guard Museum, across from the Barnstable Unitarian Church on Main Street ( Rte. 6A )

Length: 2 miles, time to complete: 2 hours

Narrative: Join Trail Steward Doug Payson on a walk along the Cape Cod Pathways that course through Barnstable Village. Along the trail, learn about the geology of the spine of Cape Cod and the plants and animals that inhabit the different environments left by the last glacier. A moderate hike with some hills, please wear appropriate footwear.

Directions: From the traffic lights at Millway, take Main Street ( Route 6A) and park to the left of the Coast Guard Museum, across from the Barnstable Unitarian Church.
